Tungsten Carbide Gem Cage Necklace for people who loves science or who needs some stress relief object that you can be in contact with your hand.

First I came across with the material after watching BBC Four science program " Secrets of the Super Element" presented by my favourite UK material scientist Mark Miodownik.

I was so inspired and decided to create a jewellery with one of the elements he introduced. I choose to work with Tungsten Carbide. Tungsten can mine in the Uk and Tungsten Carbide balls also manufacture here in the UK.

Tungsten carbide is roughly 10 times harder than 18k gold and it won't get scratch at all. It is getting popular metal for wedding rings but I liked the idea that you can hold your Tungsten Carbide Ball and feel the element in your hand. I came up with the gem cage that can pop your gem out. As the metal is so hard, I decided to use bronze for the cage and finish with sterling silver chain. The ball rotates in its cage and you can play with it.

I found a factory makes beautiful tungsten carbide ball near where I live and got my perfect sizes for my jewellery.

I love making a piece of jewellery that can interact and puzzle people's mind. After wearing it for myself, I realised that this necklace can be used as a stress relief necklace. As it rotates in the cage, you can turn the tungsten ball and it gives some relaxation. I hope people can find this necklace very amusing on the different levels.
